Subject: User FAQs: Will I be able to get in to the APS? I'm arriving on the weekend/after hours/coming for the first time.
User FAQ:
Will I be able to get in to Argonne and the APS? I will arrive on the weekend/late at night/I don't have a valid APS User badge.

To come to the APS as a user, you need to register (click the green button and follow instructions). That starts the process for your site access approval. When you complete the ESAF for your beamtime, your entry on the Experimenters tab will show the status of your site access approval. If you are approved for access, it will show the date your site access approval expires. Otherwise, you will see a note to contact the User Office. You will not be able to come to Argonne until your site access is approved.

If it's your first visit and you don’t have a badge, or if your badge has expired, make sure you log in to the APS User Portal and use the My Check In tab to indicate the dates you will be on site. That will request a gate pass for you in case you arrive when the Vistors Center is closed. When the Visitors Center is closed, there will be a gate pass waiting for you at the Main Gate (Northgate Road). You will need to present all your identifying documents at the Main Gate in order to pick up your gate pass. Note that the gatepass will not get you in to the APS during the weekend. You need to go to the APS with one of your groupmates who has a valid badge, or you need to call the beamline: 630-252-1908. Once you get to the beamline, it is possible to sign out a temporary prox card that will let you access the doors to the APS. Be sure to return the prox card at the end of your experiment. While you are logged in to the APS User Portal, also check the My Training tab and complete or update any required training.

If you arrive when the Visitors Center is open, go there first to get an APS User Badge that will also serve as a pass to get you onsite. If you arrived when the Visitors Center was closed, that's also where you need to go to trade in your gatepass for an APS User Badge. Also please note that a new APS User badge will not get you in to the APS -- you need to go to the APS User Office in the 401 Building to get the card activated for entry.
