[7/28/2310:31 AM] Dufresne, Eric

This is a rare bug for the Windows Users only. On one of my PCs running Windows 10,
I encountered a problem with the Start Menu taking forever to come up. It shows as a blue circle
over the Windows White Square. IT tells me the only fix is to reinstall the user profile.

7/28/23 I'm fixing it and upgrading to W11.

4PM W11 is up and running and preliminary performance is good.
Link software also works.

Detailed Description:
I am currently having issues with my Desktop spooky3 on the xray network in Rm 432E020. It runs W10 and I'm having a File Explorer
problem with a running circle causing huge delays in opening the start menu. It is useless in this current state. This is when I run
on the 8ideuser profile. This profile needs to be fixed, and backed up before repair. I would like to also upgrade it to Windows 11.
Perhaps upgrading alone will fix the 1st problem stated. Please assign Chris Kirsten to it as he explained the problem to me.

Hi Eric,

Yes, the timing is very unfortunate. We really need to get the tracker serviced going in to the dark period though - better for everyone.
Mohan approved both trackers in this case - the one Brian is using was purchased exclusively for beamline alignment.
I have an idea going forward that will benefit everyone.

We have a Leica AT930 tracker that was purchased by the upgrade. It does not have built-in WiFi, but can connect through a router.
We are currently using it for IDVC alignment in 981, but this work is nearly complete. We connect to it through a LAN cable.
In your case, the instrument will be set up in a semi-permanent location and will not need a Wifi connection.

The AT 930 lends itself better to your application. The AT 403 on the other hand is a superior surveying instrument and
is better for our beamline alignment activities.

The insertion device vacuum chambers are nearly complete. The AT 930 should be available around the time
our instrument is returned.

I think it will be a good trade... let's discuss further.

Kind regards,

Bill

Subject: Re: Laser Tracker (APSU) demo

To clarify, the AT403 is better for our application because of its portability and ease of setup. We will
be in every single hutch in the experiment hall over the next year or more, and having the lightweight
instrument will make our operations more efficient.

The AT903 is a heavier, more robust instrument that is more complicated to set up. It has the same
accuracy as the AT403, and includes both an absolute distance meter (time of flight) and a laser
interferometer with a much higher sampling rate. The tracking is much smoother.

The cost difference is significant. The AT930 was ~$130K; the AT403 was ~$80K.

I think the trade would be mutually beneficial.

Hi Eric,

These instruments are rather robust; I would expect 10 years of service. The instrument we would
like to trade is ~5 years old, but has not seen as much service as our newer ones because of the lack
of WiFi connectivity.

An advantage to developing the process using the AT930 is that at the end of the upgrade project we
will have excess trackers. These will be AT930's that can be used for detector positioning. We do not
want to give up the AT403's.

  867   Fri Apr 21 13:19:31 2023 Joe Strzalka8-ID-"G"DetectorsPilatus 1MF update for hdf5
For migration to APS-U/9-ID CSSI and automated workflows, support for hdf5 files from the Pilatus 1MF detector is advantageous. Keenan Lang updated both the SuSe linux and AreaDetector version on the Pilatus server (s8pilatus1mf) to provide hdf5 support. It was not possible to update AreaDetector on OpenSuSe 10.3.

Keenan's email on 2023.04.12:
"I was able to update the computer from OpenSuse 10.3 to OpenSuse 11.0, which was a 1.3GB update and what pushed the OS partition to be so close to being full. With that update, I was able to build a new enough version of EPICS base and just finished compiling AreaDetector.

"That said, OpenSuse 11.0 is still an OS that went end of life in 2010 and the libraries are still drastically out of date. I am using a version of EPICS base from a few releases ago because the latest two releases require a newer version of perl. And I had to disable one of the newer areaDetector plugins (PluginBadPixel) because it needed a newer version of C++ than the computer has. Overall, nothing that is going to majorly impact your usage of the detector, but what I'm setting up now is going to be what you are stuck with going forward unless the OS gets further updates (that will require more hard drive space for the OS)."

Keenan's email on 2023.04.13:
"I believe that I've got everything set up now. There's a startup script in the home directory, start_epics_PVA
It takes the commands start, stop, restart, medm, and status
So
>start_epics_PVA start
to start up the IOC. And then
>start_epics_PVA medm
to bring up the control screen"

Keenan email 2023.04.14:
"The startup script for the new areadetector is ~/start_epics_PVA
running
>start_epics_PVA medm
will pop up the detector screen
>start_epics_PVA run
will run the IOC
there are also the commands start/stop/restart/status for running the IOC in a background process rather than in the terminal."

2023.04.21
Subsequent work with Max Wyman demonstrates that AreaDetector for the Pilatus now takes the native .tif file from the Pilatus server /ramdisk and writes it to the network drive in hdf5 format with Metadata formatted according to the XML Layout and Attributes files.

Hi Eric,

I understand that the tracker we have been borrowing is now needed for development of the detector positioning project.

We are happy to return it and appreciate that we were able to use it for a while.

We do have one request - The Spatial Analyzer license you lent us is the SA Ultimate version.
We would like to continue borrowing the license. We have another SA license that is the SA Pro version.
I do not think you need the additional capabilities in the SA Ultimate version - if possible, we would
like to trade out the licenses as we need the SA Ultimate capability for the beamline survey networks.
The SA Pro version should do everything you need it to do for the detector positioning.

We can arrange for the return of the instrument at any time. Kindly let us know if the
software trade is acceptable to you.

Thank You,

Bill

Narayanan, Suresh Textbook alignment in 8ID-I, good flux and si1 and si2 are aligned. Slightly funny assymmetric shape on si1 vertical beam profile.

The large monitor on pepper stopped working today, no power LED on anymore, and the breaker works.
I borrowed a monitor from 8-ID-I and am now using one monitor only.

855   Thu Jul 28 18:20:28 2022 Eric Dufresne8-ID GeneralComputers and NetworkBeamline distributed server and storage outage resolved 7/30/2022 at 11h23 after a ~44 hrs outage
On 7/28/2022 around 15h30, our Linux server froze up.
All services on beamline Linux machines were affected so only our office PCs
and laptop could access email and teleconferencing software.
For example on pepper, you could not click on any native applications resident on the computer
and you couldn't open any centralized software like caQtDM, etc...
All centralized software were down. The problem was restored today at 11h23, see below
for select emails. More details on my personnal logs https://logbook.xray.aps.anl.gov/sector7/research/2572

The beamline 8-ID-I was restored by Suresh first with good flux.
8ID-E had a small matlab problem, so it was restarted, but the flux was good too.

Per Suresh, only about 7 beamlines were operational during this outage, out of 57 beamlines.

UPDATE to beamline distributed server and storage outage:

The IT team actively working this issue with HPE engineering support were able to determine that
the initiating event which occurred on July 28, change the zoning configuration on the external fiber channel
switches, resulting in all ports being disconnected.

The zoning configuration issue was recently cleared and connections from servers to storage re-established.

As of this writing, all XSD and CAT virtual servers have been restored to full availability.

The IT team continues to work with the HPE support team that was assembled for this outage to
improve system configuration and prevent recurrence.

Thank you for your patience while this significant issue was addressed, and to the IT team for their tireless
efforts over the last 40+ hours in bringing this to successful resolution, and future steps to be taken to prevent recurrence.

Beamline users,

A hardware failure has caused the dservs to go in to a "paused" state. APS IT staff are working to resolve the issue.

This has caused some beamline services to go offline and make some filesystems inaccessible.
