We have two Nova V2F in 8-ID-I.
The left Nova V2F in att. 1 has PDBS , the right one has pind1, pind2, pind3 (IC1), pind4.
The two outputs on the V2F goes:
1) to the Joerger EPICS scaler
2) to the Joerger Display above bronze, model QVSC.

In the middle of the 8-ID-I rack, on the right, there is a board with 2 rows of 8 signals, these are
TTL-NIM converters. The inputs takes the output of the V2Fs and send them on the output to the
Joerger QVSC. So on this board, Input 4 is pind4, and input 5 is pdbs.

Finally Suresh has configured SoftGlue unit B here referred as SG-B input channel 6
to record the transmission detector. In vacuum it would be pind4, but Qingteng
wants to record the second ion chamber instead, so today we wired this.
The SG-B panel is shown in att. 4.

The SR570 PDBS unit (#5) is not responding. Using instead spare unit from Sec 26. Everything works,
except that the spare unit is not connected serially so at the moment only pind3 can be controlled in EPICS.
We set the same gain at 10 nA/V. The signal on IC2 is about 80% of IC1. I think I don't need to check the
impact of the T (kind of difficult to remove too).

I had a question to Suresh.

There is the direct method, that is plug the signal from the
pin diode after the SR-570 and look at the voltage on a scope.
On pind1, the signal was roughly 1.5V on 10/5/21 for 1D focusing at 11 keV,
so high ~like 7x10^11 ph/s, at 200 uA/V. We observed 0.1V peak to peak.
https://anl.box.com/s/qj29qzajsxgo0gzgjddy1wsqaw73yzg1

We have handy a Tektronic 3032 DPO scope with 300 MHz analog bandwidth and 2.5 GS/s with a NIC.
Can it be interfaced in EPICS?
Looks like it might https://epics.anl.gov/modules/instrument/tds3000/index.html.

Yes it can.

Hi Eric,

There is no script, the waveforms can be read via the pvs which are 10k words.
SDDS basically reads these waveform pvs.

Thanks,
Nicholas

I'm also thinking of using the MCS on the 8-ID-I crate to determine the flux variations
and take an FFT from the signal.

How is the Joerger MCS set up, does it takes TTL or NIM pulses?
I forget how the Nova V2F are set up, do you remember if they output TTL or NIM pulses?
[1:34 PM] Narayanan, Suresh
NOVA does TTL only. Joerger MCS or Struck MCS, it takes TTL as well.

Zhang, Qingteng The beam is also in good shape on pind2 with a flux of 3.28x10^10 ph/s in a 15 um H si1hgap.
This is only 10% lower that on 10/19/2021 where it was 3.6x10^10 ph/s. Recall last week it was only 1.44x10^10 ph/s.
I am going to let you take over. I have something at 10am for APS-U, and I don't know what you have in the sample stage.

I did also perform a crlx scan with pind2 with si2 at 150 um (V) by 15 um (H).
This is shown here: https://8id.xray.aps.anl.gov/specplots/8idi/2021/11/tingxu20211117/s00002.svg

8ID elog: https://logbook.xray.aps.anl.gov/8id/8-ID/692 below.

I didn't write any evidence backing this claim.
I wrote this in my JSR paper for 7.35 keV in the

and wrote it in Figure 15 https://journals.iucr.org/s/issues/2020/06/00/gb5109/gb5109fig15.html.

"One would expect to either demagnify the horizontal source (20 µm FWHM) or the pinhole (16.6 µm FWHM).
We observe 28.6 µm FWHM horizontally. We suspect this broadening of the focal spot is caused by the
heat bump of the Si monochromator which is not observed in the vertical."

Qingteng, it was a lucky check with the filters, but maybe I suspected this possibility.

I got fooled also by a picture from you about the downstream

The vacuum in TV6 was set on input 2 instead of 4 which can be toggled by the

I include here a picture of the second unit in EPICS also.
I think SP4 is the downstream high vacuum. I am not sure
what's the upstream flight path in EPICS, but it is on

We don't see the same lines.
We see in the tune signals from a stripline (searching for high frequencies) a line at 21.5 kHz in y plane,
and lines at 7.0, 18.7, 37 kHz in x plane. But not at 12 kHz.

From rf bpms (searching for lower frequencies) we have 60, 120 and 147 Hz lines.

He also noticed something at 12 kHz. Anything from your end at this high a frequency?

I did some quick measurements on the blocks and here's what I find:

-- I should be able to fit 3 blocks on the fly stage with <10 mm of extension (see photo attached).
I'll send Ray the drawing for adaptor plate so that he could drop it at the machine shop first thing in the morning;

-- The opening of the block is 10 mm long, meaning anything in the capillary taller than 10 mm will be clipped
by the block (there's almost no clipping at the bottom though), so I would not recommend 25 mm tall of samples (see photo attached);

[6:38 PM] Dufresne, Eric
Hi Joe, I need help with a userCalc record. I had a userCalc in the past which worked. Recently the PV changed name, it is longer,
and I cannot get userCalc to add it. Is there a maximum length for a PV in the userCalc calculation? Will show what I mean in a picture.

[6:40 PM] Dufresne, Eric
The prefix has just changed (from 8LAMBDA2) to DP_LAMBDA250K_1 and I want to write in the B field
userCalc6.png

[6:46 PM] Dufresne, Eric
In the above image with the new prefix, I cannot enter the full PV name on the B parameter, it clips to _R instead of _RBV. It is as if
someone put a maximum record length for the string at 39 characters.

[6:55 PM] Sullivan, Joseph
I'm afraid there is a maximum string length of 40 characters in that epics version.

The PV is 41 character long: DP_LAMBDA250K_1:cam1:NumImagesCounter_RBV Smile
It is the number of images taken by Area Detector.

We wanted to use this field to control some sample conditions.
We're using python instead of a userCalc as a result of this limitation.

ED

P.S. The MSD user created a python script to run this instead.
See Sep 2021 in spec_data.

Re: Sample stage

Hi all,

unfortunately, the way I have programmed this no longer works.
It is caused by a limit of the string length provided to a userCalc record.
This length is limited to 40 characters and my PV is 41 characters!
DP_LAMBDA250K_1:cam1:NumImagesCounter_RBV
It use to work because it started with 8LLAMBDA2.
The above PV is too long, but tells you the number of image collected by AD.
I am not reprogramming the detector and beamline at this time by changing the name of the detector.

What I am proposing instead would be to ignore this altogether and write
a simple python script that detects the time elapsed since it started, and from the time,
you can program a periodic function to drive the amplitude of the Keithley.

The voltage to apply is this PV: epics_put('8ide:2400:setVoltAO',30) (epics_put is a spec command).
An idea is to get the time of day from the IOC, a useful PV would be: 8idd:HEARTBEAT (time in seconds since start up)
8idd:TOD is a string with the calendar time of day called Current Time in the IOC status screen attached.
This can be grabbed for documentation. The heartbeat is the useful data to make an arbitrary
function generator.

You can make a python script with the frequency and amplitude and call it in spec
before the padtimescan call, making sure it is put in the background and stops
after Nseconds as programmed in the padtimescan call.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Sorry about my late response, but Hashimoto-san and Yoshida-san already informed QZ with instruction how to recover from the current situation.
Hashimoto-san found the cause of the problem and now we are working to fix the problem to update the server.
With current version, it looks like, if you set the threshold below 4 keV, server cannot find the files for

Dear Nakaye-san,

It seems like the entire controls is very fragile. I was using yesterday in the slow mode and it worked well.
Now the IOC wont take any images and see the “error: 33619976”

If these things keep happening, then we cannot run user operations. There are experiments that will fully rely
on this and we cannot get away with running Lambda for example. If slow mode does not work, we can get away
with Lambda. But if the whole thing fails, then we have to cancel the user experiment.

Why does this error keep happening? Is there a troubleshooting process that can be documented that we can
go through in steps? Usually, power cycle fixes most things but it is not clear here what to do.

Keenan, do you know what this error is?

sym link to always point to the current file), will be a good practice to manage things better.

Also, a database of error code and what it means could save a lot of trouble.

Hi Marychris,

can you please send this to your technical folks and ask them to get back to me?
The system I am using should still be under warranty.
I am having weird behavior with the inert gas unit, so I include
a report I wrote about the behavior.

Eric

Hi Eric,

Thank you for sending along the report on the issue you are seeing with your diamond monitor. After looking through it we
have a few follow up questions (below) before making any conclusions. If it is easier and you are available for a call
next week to run through things please let us know.

  • The report mentions restarting the electrometer. What are the symptoms that drive the restart? i.e.
software related crashes, or testing to see if this changes the diamond behavior
  • Has anything changed in the test setup or analysis since March? Or since the diamond was first installed?
  • Are all components in the inert gas purge UHP rated? Including tubing, regulator, etc.

Thank you,

Val

Valerie, all in cc,

I've found the electrometer not as stable as I would have expected. I've had to power cycle it sometimes few times a week to get
reliable signals. I don't have any error logs to report, but I'll make a table below of my observations in July.
Not very detailed, sorry.

Nothing changed since March, but some mechanical mounting. In March I changed motorized stages under it.

The BPM is always under N2 flow (High Purity Grade), and with the recommended flow.

Eric

7/13 Had to restart twice to remove large background currents of 11 uA. X-ray total current ~ 100nA.
7/19 Rebooted EM after end of experiment after noting dark currents were high.
7/23 BPM/EPICS not running. Did reset

Eric,

Attached is the IEMR report for you device. As you will see from the report the metallization of the sensor has been compromised.
Contamination in the operating environment is the suspected cause of the performance degradation.
Our recommendation is to replace the diamond and requalify the device.

Let us know how you wish to proceed.

Ta pinholes, 20 could end up a bit larger is my guess.

Hi Suresh,

No problem. I try to help you.

You can see the pinhole in the holder. The side that you can see in the
holder is flat/polish. The cone side of the pinhole you can not see
because this side faces to the holder, this side is bonded to the holder.

The cone side of the holder faces to the sample.

Do I need any permission to start using it today?

Eric,
I checked with my colleague Shawn this morning on the AT403 Battery Questions you asked on Friday afternoon, here is Shawn’s response.

for the 960 and the 40x trackers the batteries are not charged when plugged in with power cable as well-the batteries are only for back up
power or when power is unplugged for a move or to be used when in an area that power is not available. The batteries are only charged when
on the charging station for the AT 40x trackers. For the AT 960 systems the batteries are charged when power cable is plugged into the
battery but will not charge if they are only connected to the controller-does that answer your questions

Hi Eric,

I think there has been a mix-up in who got which license.
License #10518 is the Pro version of Spatial Analyzer, and #10519 is the Ultimate version.
We are in possession if #10519, but I recall that we ordered the Pro version.
Can you confirm whether your order included the Ultimate version? This should be listed in your original invoice from Hexagon.
If so, we will need to exchange the license keys... Sorry for the confusion - this just came to my attention.

Some progress has been made on freezing NX for 8ID-E. It looks as though specr causes the full workstation to lock down
when you try to overlay data from multiple scans. Note the image below. I opened up pymca for them and showed Lingjia
how to plot multiple scans with it. Killing matlab doesn't help, did a full reboot.
I tried restarting NX but this failed for me or the beamline account.

Also yesterday decided to use virtual as a test. Still crashed at 9am this morning. Virtual had similar speed as physical in Sweeden,
but lower resolution. It is nicer so I'll stay with the physical display.

Because the expression is too long, it connects userCalc7 to userCalc6.
Note that the output of userCalc6 is read in variable A in userCalc7.
The calculation can only be as long as I have in userCalc6 so I had to nest two userCalcs.
In this attachment showing a test, userCalc6 goes from 0 to 1 with a period of NumImages/10 = 60 files, the switch occurs
every 30 files and it goes from 0, 0.5 and 1 in three files.
I would try to keep in the number of periods even like 2,4...
It drives the Keithley Source meter https://logbook.xray.aps.anl.gov/8id/8-ID/528
so this is convenient for higher excitation voltages.

An earlier version is shown in att. 3 for userCalc5.

/net/s8iddserv/xorApps/epics/synApps_6_0/ioc/8ideBPM/iocBoot/iocbpm/8ideBPM.sh usage
Usage: 8ideBPM.sh {start|stop|restart|status|console|run|css}

[12/3/20 1:22 PM] Peterson, Kevin M.
start will start the IOC in a screen session, run will run the IOC on the command line outside of screen.

[12/3/20 1:22 PM] Peterson, Kevin M.
If you run 8ideBPM.sh with start, and the IOC doesn't appear to be running, use the run argument and you'll see the error.

To summarize, you turn on the unit, then start the ioc with 8ideBPM.sh run.
Then you follow with 8ideBPM.sh css to start CSS control environment.

Only one instance of this process is allowed.

[6/24 2:31 PM] From Suresh
Thomas, Joe, the 8-ID autoshutter control for the past month or more, even maybe last cycle,
I enable on Monday afternoon and find that before next morning it is disabled again.
Could you please take a look?

[8:34 AM] From Joe Sullivan
Suresh,
the 'Lease Date' has expired. This does a Disable when the permits change states.
Bump up the lease date the next time the A-Shutter is closed.

[10:38 AM] Walsh, Thomas R.
What is the reason for the lease Date?

[2:15 PM] Narayanan, Suresh
to make people remember that such an auto tool exists that can keep opening the shutter even if you dont want to.
I am serious, incident happened at 33id 8 years ago that kept opening the shutter while beam was burning through a bellow

[2:15 PM] Narayanan, Suresh
based on that incident, lease feature was added by Joe and also the auto disable on Monday was added as well

7/6/2021 Update
Changed lease date to 11/30/2022... Should fix the problem Suresh mentioned above.

794 Wed Jun 23 19:48:15 2021 Eric Dufresne8-ID GeneralComputers and Networkwww.xray.aps.anl.gov and how to make your own web page

A few of us on 7ID have web pages located on our /home/beams/ directory.
Dave Wallis has made it easy recently to view these web pages with
a personnal web service:

https://www.xray.aps.anl.gov/~dufresne/

My files are in ~/public_html which means
/home/beams/DUFRESNE/public_html
and the top file displayed on my web page
/home/beams/DUFRESME/public_html/index.html

Could be also index.htm if you save it with windows.

I find it sometimes very helpful to share files quickly so I have
a pub directory:
/home/beams/DUFRESNE/public_html/8ID/8ID-E/pub

Others have made web pages in the past at 7ID:
https://7id.xray.aps.anl.gov/
https://7id.xray.aps.anl.gov/~dwalko/
https://7id.xray.aps.anl.gov/~wen/

This is FYI.
